Interesting facts about me

I teach political science at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia. There's a lot better trout fishing here than where I grew up: Decatur, Illinois. I teach political philosophy, which is why my Board pontifications are so windy. I can't help it.

I have 2 kids and a wonderful wife that complains less about my fishing than she does about my ebay buying.

My username is stickleyboy, 'cause Stickley or mission furniture was my last (and continuing) expensive hobby. Here's a bit of my collection in the living room:

My love of old things led logically into classic cane, especially after I read Casting a Spell, by George Black.

I collect and fish working class cane (Heddons, 1 granger and a Southy), mostly rods I refinish myself. It makes no sense to buy a rod on the bay for $150, and spend 40 hours and $40 refinishing it rather than paying $350 for a mint one, but I do it anyway.

Here's a typical rig: 8 1/2' Heddon-made Lyon and Coulson Captain refinished in antique gold and brown ('cause I think it's pretty) with pre-war Medalist.

I'd rather catch a 9" brookie than a 18" rainbow, but I'd also rather catch a 22" rainbow than a 10" brookie.

And I'm currently obsessed with prewar Heddon Imperial #125s:

    Jim-
I'm just getting caught up on the forum happenings. Is your elbow feeling any better?
I know from personnel experience how frustrating injuries can be. I served three tours in the Gulf and suffered some horrific injuries. Spent a couple of years in and out of UCLA med Center and Balboa naval hospital
I was left handed however, I'm unable to use this arm. I taught myself how to fly fish and tie flies with my right arm. It felt awkward at first-stick with it, it gets easier. Just practise on the lawn or wherever before heading out.

My final suggestion-take up fishing the soft hackle. It's easy enough to throw line upstream. Then mend and feed line.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

    Vance,

    Thanks for the note.

I did get better. Switching to bamboo helped, I think, and so did some stretching exercises a student of mine "prescribed" from an internship she did with a orthropod. Overall, it sounds like I've had it way easier than you.

Can you give me any more details about fishing soft hackles? I fish them like a nymph and on the swing. I'm unfamiliar with the "mend and feed line" technique.

    best wishes, Jim
